Cinema Today
Although there have been a number of technological achievements in recent years which for all intents and purposes should have seen a decline in the popularity of cinema worldwide, audiences are still flocking in great numbers to theatres to see the newest blockbuster.
Whilst the internet, digital subscription television, and DVD technologies have meant that movies are now available to audiences at home much sooner than what they have been in the past, cinema has been fighting to keep people in theatres with technologies such as the huge IMAX screens, 3D spectaculars, and lush theatre kit-outs (lounges, recliners, and silver service). Luckily there is a belief amongst many movie goers that the majority of today’s most popular movies are more enjoyable if experienced on the big screen with surround sound, and this has helped keep numbers at a high. Releases such as the Spiderman, X-Men, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter series’ have gone a long way to improve crowds desperate to see films as soon as they are released to cinemas. The popularity of Disney and Pixar animation movies are also bringing families to the movies in large numbers.
In recent years a number of remakes have also experienced box-office success, including Alfie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Italian Job and The Chronicles of Narnia. British actors are also experiencing significant success, with actresses such as Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, Catherine Zeta Jones and Keira Knightley, and actors such as Hugh Grant, Jude Law, Ewan McGregor and Daniel Radcliffe topping many directors’ wish lists.
